As mentioned on our class website under
Homework Assignment, I would like you to propose a topic that you would like to explore in some detail over the course of the semester on your personal blog. Creating the blog can come later, but if you have that provide the URL in your post.
As a new post, write a paragraph or brief description of what you plan to do. Feel free to propose a number of topics you might be interested in pursuing. We can offer some suggestions. Come up with an idea or two by next class on Jan. 28.
I have narrowed my blog proposal to two healthcare topics. Wearable tracking devices (medical tech) or Healthcare Big Data. They both sound interesting and compelling. For the medical tech topic, I could discuss the different types of wearable techs that are being used in healthcare. I can expand on this by concentering on different devices or techs each week and how they are contributing toward self-sufficient patient care. For a tech guy like myself a new wave of wearable health devices is important to follow and see how much technology has evolved. And since I’m interested in a potential career in big data, investigating how big data functions in healthcare could be beneficial for me. Big Data in healthcare is also expected to see some growth. One reason being that data analytic experts have begun to help providers effectively use data to improve business operations, personalize care for patients, and/or discover new medical insights. But I would also like to see is how the transition of big data is occurring, what are the cost stipulations and the technical requirements.
ReplyDeleteLuis, both good topics. I think you will probably get more bang for the buck by looking at big data in healthcare. There are many applications, but improving business operations as well as new medical insights about patient care and new innovations. Also, there is some backlash against using big data for everything, when listening to patients takes a back seat to care.
DeleteWearables is also a great topic. Not just the devices but how to get people to pay attention to it, especially when their health depends on it. Lots of possible topics there, too.
Your choice, of course. My role here is to offer considerations, to make sure it is something you can cover in some depth over the semester.

Quick summary: why is our society so focused on pills and the pharmaceutical business, and why are we so opposed to accepting unconventional treatments, such as acupuncture or meditation, as legitimate options?
Thanks. Here is the linkable url. (Have to use "a href" on Blogger commenting), or cut and paste. http://mis406willzielinski.blogspot.com/2016/01/topic-proposal-assignment.html
DeleteI'll show you how to "follow" blogs so that you can get email updates when posts are added.
I commented on your blog, but until we all follow each other, I think this is fine topic.
DeleteI have decided to work on "Medical Device Security" and "Security in the Health Network". With the advent of medical devices being more intelligent and connected to the systems for storing data, security is/will be a huge threat. Many propose medical devices to be connected to the Internet too, making the platform a haven for severe security breaches. Medical device security is independent of computer security and maintains a special significance as the outcomes may be life-threatening and data is very private. In my blog I wish to cover both sides of security - attacking these devices and protecting against attacks. Much literature has been published in this domain and it is certainly going to increase.
ReplyDeleteThere are two main aspects of medical device security:
1. The physical device has been hampered by an attack which deals with wireless communication, bad hardware/software, malware etc.
2. Many hospitals are now storing patient data in their server and since hospitals are not aware of the world of hacking do not stress upon robust security measures for their data. This data is under threat and there are many cases of breaches on these hospital systems.
In conclusion, I would like to explore security in the health network that links - medical devices -> hospital systems -> doctors -> re-program medical devices based on device data. I hope this topic aligns with the class objectives.
I would probably focus on one of these areas. Device security is a huge problem, and not one well understood. As you delve into this topic, it will certainly touch on how medical devices are linked (networked) to the larger healthcare system. I like the two main aspects you mentioned, but to keep it focused, consider the first: the vulnerability of the physical medical device. Tyler is interested in data breaches, and I think trying to do more than the physical device may be too broad of a scope in one semester. Certainly, as you learn more about medical devices, you may also learn more about the larger health network. Let me know your thoughts.

DeleteFor my personal blog, I would like to further examine previous cases of security breaches of healthcare sites and devices, to determine whether there is any type of patterns or reasons leading healthcare systems to be more vulnerable than other types of sites/devices. I believe that while data security is extremely important in general, it is especially important within the healthcare network considering the degree of sensitive information that it involves.

Both you and Aakarsh may want to work together on this. It sounds like you both have interests in devices and data breaches. I tend to see them as separate but related. Here's one idea: Aakarsh works mostly on security of medical devices, and Tyler works mostly on data breaches. You can certainly combine your efforts, and there may be overlap, but it may help to get you started that you start down different paths in the beginning, and share your work with each other. If ok, we can figure this out in more detail in class.
DeleteI would like to get in depth with the new medical price gouging that we've been seeing and explore why different hospitals are charging sky high dollars for the same tests. Charging patients for tests done have been described as liqueur to the hospital industry: the center of profit.
ReplyDeleteHere is a brief look at what I'd like to explore and discuss in my blog:

Well today's topic will certainly give you a leg up in the area. The Ted Talk by Jeffrey Brenner (on our next blog) describes reasons for this in great detail. Plus the NYTimes series we read about and headline news on this pretty much everyday. I'd like you to be able to explain the reasons behind the high prices, as well as consider examples of hospitals not charging as much, or reducing costs. We can help you with this, too.
DeleteI am very interested in exploring HIPAA and how it is affecting the healthcare industry, both the delivery of healthcare and the individual consumer experience. This ties in nicely with other suggested topics, which I can pull into my blog throughout the semester. I hope that my angle on this subject will complement the chosen topics of others so that we can dig deeper into some related findings that affect more than one of our projects.

Great topic. Lots of info here, and we can help. I agree with you about how these topics inter-relate, which is great. Knowing what you all want to cover here will help me make sure we cover it in more detail, too.
