We covered this topic in "Escape Fire" and we read about alternatives to treating pain with acupuncture. Last semester I read
this opinion from the Sunday NYT paper on 11/8 and decided to blog about it (than post it on FB). It is also related to the topic we just covered.
The article begins by asking,
why is there an "alarming and steady increase in the mortality rate of middle-aged white Americans" since 1999? According to a
study published last week (short pdf; read it), much of the excess death is attributable to suicide and drug and alcohol poisonings. Opioid painkillers like OxyContin prescribed by physicians contribute significantly to these drug overdoses.

"Driving this opioid epidemic, in large part, is a disturbing change in the attitude within the medical profession about the use of these drugs to treat pain." The article states that the rate of death from prescription opioids in the United States dwarfed the combined mortality from heroin and cocaine, and an increasing use of . What is not mentioned in this article is the growing use of heroin laced with fentanyl, which is what kills most people, both young and old. Here is an article about Tucson's rising death rate, as it's closeness to the border and the new drug of choice among large drug cartels in Mexico because of its demand.
ReplyDeleteRecent news related to this topic. White women are dying at a slightly younger age than in the past. That's according to a report released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics. Results show that life expectancy was reduced from 81.2 years to 81.1 years — from 2013 to 2014. Though one month may not seem like much, demographers worry — it's the first time since the government began keeping records that white women's life expectancy has declined, according to the report.
ReplyDeleteThe numbers don't include cause of death, but demographer Elizabeth Arias, who wrote the analysis, decided to dig deeper. She looked at cause of death among white people in the U.S. over the past 15 years. And the changes she found troubled her.
"For the age group 25 to 54, suicide went up," she says. " 'Unintentional poisonings,' which is mainly alcohol and drug poisoning, and chronic liver disease — those went up by quite a bit."
Those underlying factors affected men and women, Arias says, but affected women more. The life expectancy of white men over the same time period did not change.
